New Arrivals: Cohiba Robusto + Hoyo Epicure No 2

Just a couple of small packs to give me a bit more variety in the humidor. I have never had the Cohiba Robusto’s so I just thought it was about time, and with the weather drawing in its time for slightly quicker smokes.

I have had the Hoyo’s before and they are a nice stick when you just want a light – medium cigar.

Review: Cohiba Siglo III

siglo3

This is a review I wrote a while ago and saved as a draft, I had completed it but forgot to publish it, so tonight I am being a bit lazy and just posting this review.

This is the third Cohiba Siglo cigar I have smoked, I really enjoyed the other 2 (Siglo II and Siglo IV), so I have decided to try all the sizes in the range.

In order to compare this cigar to the other Siglo’s I have smoked I will, where appropriate, use the same descriptions as I used for the other Siglo reviews. So here we go…

Appearance 9.5/10

This cigar has a lovely medium brown colour wrapper, with small veins, and a little tooth. The band is very classy as you would expect from Cohiba, and the overall look, like all Cohiba cigars is one of quality.

Construction & Draw 7.5/10

This cigar is very well constructed with no soft or hard spots, cap construction was excellent and I got a nice clean cut from my Palio cutter. The draw as per all other Siglo’s I have smoked was pretty much perfect, cool and easy from start to finish.

However you may notice that I have scored construction lower than the previous Siglo’s I have reviewed, this is because about half way through the burn line wobbled, and did not recover. In the end I had to use my lighter to correct the burn line, something I don’t really expect on a premium cigar.

Flavour 9.0/10

The flavour profile of this cigar is unsurprisingly very similar to others in the range, creamy with some strong coffee flavours. The cigar developed vanilla tones at around half way, and in the last third I picked up a hay/flowery note which just added nicely to the flavour profile. This is a solid medium strength cigar, and is a classy, sophisticated, and amazingly smooth smoke.

Value 8.0/10

As I have mentioned in my other Siglo reviews, there is no getting away from it the entire Cohiba Siglo range is expensive compared to other cigars, the Siglo III is no exception, however sometimes you pay for quality and sophistication.

Summary 8.0/10

As expected this cigar is very similar to the others in the range that I have smoked (Siglo II and IV), for me I would find it difficult to choose between the different sizes in the range, I would probably just decide based on how much time I had to smoke.

I did drop the final score by 0.5, whilst I hope that the burn issue was just a one off, my score has to reflect this, especially for a premium cigar. However the burn issue will not stop my smoking one in the near future.

Review: Cohiba Siglo IV

Siglo 4

If you have been reading this blog you will know that about 1 year ago I smoked my first cigar, it was a Siglo II, so almost a year on I thought I would try a large Siglo, and I chose the IV.

I was hoping that the Siglo IV would be a slightly stronger, richer cigar, and as its bigger would perhaps have slightly more complexity, at the very least if its as good as the II but takes longer to smoke that would be acceptable.

Appearance 9.5/10

This cigar has a lovely medium brown colour wrapper, has small veins, and its construction was exceptional, the cigar was well packed with no hard or soft spots.

Construction & Draw 9.0/10

This cigar is just as well constructed as the Siglo II, the draw on this cigar was absolutely perfect, it was easy and cool from start to finish. The burn on this cigar was razor sharp, and needed no correction.

Flavour 9.0/10

Unlike the Siglo II I think this cigar is stronger, I would say this is a medium to full strength cigar from the start, and as hoped it did taste slightly richer, by the end I would classify this cigar as full strength.

The IV is every bit as smooth and creamy as the II, it started off with strong coffee flavours, and developed vanilla tones at around half way. In the last third I picked up a hay/flowery note which just added nicely to the flavour profile.

Value 8.0/10

As I mentioned in my last Siglo review, there is no getting away from it the entire Cohiba Siglo range is expensive compared to other cigars, the Siglo IV is no exception. However I have given the IV a slightly higher value score than the II, the reason is that it has a slightly more complex flavour profile, and I think the size/cost is slightly better.

Summary 9.0/10

In many ways this is almost just a bigger version of the II, but for me I enjoyed its extra strength and richness, and this makes me more likely to choose the IV over the II. Yes these are expensive, but they are also a great smoke, whilst I could never justify a box of these in the humidor, it would be nice to have one always on hand….

Review: Cohiba Behike 54

cohiba_behike_54

The Cohiba Behike 54 was my Christmas treat cigar in 2012.  I read so many reviews that suggested that you “have to try” this cigar once in your life, so I figured what the hell it Christmas.

Appearance 10/10

This cigar looks absolutely beautiful, very few small veins, it has a silky almost shiny quality to it, and I did sit and just look at the cigar for a while.  The pigtail (I think its called that) is also well constructed and firm.

Construction & Draw 10/10

The Behike feels great between your fingers with a firm springy feeling, and the construction is perfect. When you look at the packing of the tobacco its clear that someone has spent a lot of time to ensure it is as evenly packed as possible.

Flavour 9.5/10

This cigar is so smooth, its amazing, I would say its medium strength, and it has a delicate spice to it. As you get further in there is a lovely coffee and leather taste, at times it was so smooth I was tempted to inhale fully (I didn’t) but you feel that if you did it would slip down your throat like cream. As you can tell I loved it ! Oh and it produced large volumes of lovely fragrant smoke.

Value 5.0/10

This is a great cigar, but I just cant get away from the price, for me its just too expensive, you almost feel guilty as you light it. A couple of times as I was smoking it I though, “well that’s another ten pounds up in smoke”, but what a smoke! Much as I enjoyed it I just cant rate it highly for value.

Summary 7.5/10

This is a fantastic cigar, as you can tell from the review, I loved everything about this cigar, apart from the price. The Behike 54 is a wonderful smoking experience, but 34 GBP, seriously? Because of the price I really cant give this a higher overall score, if it was say 22 – 25 then I might be tempted to buy them more often, and give them a higher score. A cigar for very special occasions only!

Review: Cohiba Minis

Cigarritos_cohiba_mini

There are a number of Cuban mini’s on the market, whilst they are no replacement for a “proper” cigar, if you only have 5 minutes (or if its really cold outside), and you want something much better than a tin of small cigars from a supermarket, then they are a good option.

Appearance 5/10

These are not he prettiest cigars you will ever see, they have large veins for their size, and the wrapper is “nobly”. There is also no real distinct cap to the cigar.

Construction & Draw 7/10

These cigars are so small there is no real way for them to be plugged, the burn is even, and as these are so small they are very unlikely to have any burn issues.

Flavour 7/10

You do get a taste of a Cuban cigar, there is a hint of spice and a reasonably earthy taste, they are more rough and ready than your average Cohiba.

Value 8.0/10

These are cheap but then again they are small. At around 9 GBP for 10 they do represent good value, they offer a “taste” of what a real cigar would be, just quickly! You can probably finish one of these as quickly as your friends who smoke cigarettes.

Summary 7.0/10

These are great if you want a quick 5 minute fix (perhaps when your friends nip out for a cigarette), but for my money the Cohiba Clubs are a better bet, no sooner have you started a mini then it is finished.

Review: Cohiba Siglo II

siglo_ii

This cigar was the cigar that started it all. I have enjoyed a good single malt for a while, and as I was learning more about Whisky, cigars, and pairing cigars with Whisky kept coming up. So I decided that I would see what all the fuss was about, for my birthday I decided to do a little research and pick a cigar, I decided on a Cohiba as a good introduction and bought one.

Appearance 9.5/10

This cigar has a lovely medium brown color wrapper, it has small veins, and its construction was exceptional. The band is also worth a mention, as the printing is crisp and colorful, cap construction was excellent as well.

Construction & Draw 9.0/10

The draw on this cigar was absolutely perfect, it was easy and cool from start to finish. The cigar produced a surprising volume of smoke which even a non cigar smoker said that they really liked. The burn on this cigar was razor sharp, and needed no correction.

Flavor 9.0/10

This cigar starts off as a medium strength stick, as you get towards the end I would say it becomes medium to full. The Siglo II is a very smooth, creamy cigar, I picked up a really nice vanilla flavor through my 1.5 hrs with this cigar, and towards the middle I could taste a strong coffee note. There is nothing harsh or brash about this cigar, its pure class from start to finish.

One thing to note is that the vanilla taste persisted in my mouth long after I had finished smoking it, this is only one of a few cigars that has left a distinct flavor post completion.

Value 7.5/10

There is no getting away from it the entire Cohiba Siglo range is expensive compared to other cigars, the Siglo II is no exception, whilst it is a premium cigar, part of me feels that on a pure cost basis this cigar is over priced.

Summary 9.0/10

It may seem a bit odd to give this cigar a value rating of 7.5 and an overall rating of 9.0, the reason is that I love the quality, and flavor profile of this stick, I just wish it was a little cheaper! So not an every day smoke, but if you want to treat yourself then this is an exceptional cigar that burns very well and really hits the spot.
